unfortunately hardy has been randomly crashing/freezing since its release and there doesn't seem to be a fix in the immediate future:(

i had no other choice but to find another distro and i can tell you the latest fedora 9 doesn't suffer from crashes

use synaptic and search for build-essential. this will install the g++ compiler and standard libraries

to compile a simple c++ console app from the command line

this sometimes happens when you shut down windows/ubuntu irregularly ie holding down the power switch and doing a hard reboot, it also happens when you install under vista that has the latest patches...
