This worked for me on Karmic Kola 9.10, as well.

Which distribution are you using?

I understand Ubuntu 9.10 has Empathy installed by default :D, hence you need not install it, just configure your google account.

You can stop the above command using Ctl+c

just by using update manager (System --> Administration --> Update Manager) you would have release running.

Infact if you have updated then you are already running release ver.
