MY old computer has an i810 too. To make it have direct rendering you need to make the bits at 16 bit in the xorg. The I810 can only do direct rendering in 16bit.

You can verify what driver it is using by typing:
I have a i965 and it's using vesa by default, compiz fusion works. When I browse to my vga, it proposes to use i810, but that gives terrible results.Code:displayconfig-gtk
