I have a Fujitsu Siemans Amilo 1425B which is about 18 months old now; all of the hardware works out of the box including wireless. The wireless even works on the alternate CD installer with WEP encryption.

You will probably not find or want this laptop now, the specs are a little out of date, although not by much. But you could look up the fulls specs to get an idea of what works.

I loaded Suse on a what four year old Toshiba. I am sure Ubuntu/edubuntu could have been loaded and it would be even faster than Suse. I would try just about any laptop. new, used. It really will probably not matter. I am running Ubuntu on a $35.00 computer, right next to Edubuntu on a box I built. guess what, the little one is just as fast. Good luck to you. Gordon

I got this laptop in UK (altho I paid £350
    http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/123115/rb/0

It runs Xubuntu7.04 no problem (installed from LiveCD). I haven't tried the mic yet, but I would be astounded if it didn't work. The media card reader doesn't work (ENE don't do linux drivers), and I also haven't tried the modem (since I haven't used dial-up for ages). Wired and wireless work fine (I finally installed Wicd 1.2.9 for wireless - rather than Network Manager).

EDIT: I had to make an adjustment in alsamixer to get the sound to come out of the speakers - they speakers are configured as "surround" rather than "front" - which took 5 seconds

EDIT2: In case that's not clear - my wifi worked out of the box. It was just more stable with WPA with Wicd (download, double-click to install) than Network Manager - Xubuntu doesn't install Network Manager as a default anyway.

    Re: Wanted: Ubuntu Laptop...

i've never had any problems with ubuntu's sound, but never owned a laptop. i see no reason why that'd change though. above all i need a wireless card that works in linux. i usually build my own computers, but it's nearly impossible with a laptop, as is replacing parts later on, so i need to get one that works out of the box.

I've been looking for a laptop as well and also like the look of what Efficient PC have to offer. I have emailed them a couple of questions though and had no response and there does not seem to be a phone number. Just wondering if any one has had any experience dealing with them? and if they are a legitimate and reliable company?

    Any thought?
